Listener Question: Should I Quit My Podcast?

Podcast Transcription

This is episode one hundred and one.

Welcome to the Goal Achievement podcast, thank you so much for joining me, I hope you're all doing really well. Man, it feels good to record a new episode of this podcast, as most of you guys know, I've been recording lots of episodes and publishing lots of episodes of the Better Humans podcast, so check those out if you haven't been listening, I know many of you have, and I hope you've been enjoying those.

But I want to get back to recording more episodes of this podcast, I've been missing and missing it, missing, doing it, missing, recording it, and man, I've been getting a lot of listener questions and I've just been answering those ones on one in emails and encouraging people to meet with me for 15 minutes and then answering them.

But I want to get back to answering those here on the podcast, so I'm going to start today with a listener question, and also later this week, I have a great interview lined up for you guys for this podcast, and I can't wait to record it. It's about helping people build their websites and a really simple way, so can't wait to share that with you, haven't recorded it yet, but I will soon, and then I will get it posted right away.

So let's get into today's listener question, here it is:

Matt, I started my podcast a few weeks ago, I've recorded four episodes and I don't have much of an audience yet. About 25 people listened to the latest episode, so I think I'm going to quit recording it. What do you think?

So, dude, come on!

I think you're nuts, let it marinate a little bit, you just got started, I mean, you just got started. I'd say, you know, a few things here besides let it marinate a bit and, you know, keep publishing, I mean, for one thing, if 25 people listen to the last episode, that's kind of amazing.

If you don't have much of an audience and you have 25 people that are randomly listening and wanting to hear your ideas keep going. I mean, 25 people is a lot of people to be listening to your ideas. So, Don't... I wouldn't take that for granted, first off, and then, you know, you didn't share your link to your podcast in your question, so I haven't listened to it so I have no idea if it's wonderful or if it's or if it's terrible.

But based on that, you know, it's your first four episodes, they're probably pretty dreadful, I mean, I know mine were and I know most are. So just be thankful that not too many people are listening yet and you're going to get better and better and better and improve as you continue to record it and I would just say to keep going.

I mean, I would encourage you to record 30 or 40 episodes before you even begin to evaluate if you think it makes sense to continue it or not, I mean, especially if you're getting listeners. I mean, 25 people is 25 people listening to your thoughts and ideas and I would just encourage you to keep going.

I wouldn't get be too consumed with the metrics at this point, I would interact with your audience as much as you can and encourage them to reach out with questions and that will go a long way if you're you know, if you can start to build those relationships, something I'm definitely trying to do on this podcast, if you can try to be very accessible to your audience and yeah, and it will just slowly grow, I wouldn't freak out at all, I definitely wouldn't quit yet.

Like, let it marinate a little bit and you're going to continue to grow your audience if you're putting out good content and in your podcast is going to get better and better and better and hang in there man, I'd say definitely don't quit, yeah, I mean you just got started. Do not quit yet, you're doing great, hang in there.

Record like I said, record 30, 35, 40 episodes and then evaluate if it makes sense to continue, but don't give up yet. Give it a few, give it a give it out you know, much longer and hang in there, you're doing great. I know it can be a little frustrating, but the hard part's over getting deciding what you're going to record on and getting the equipment and all that, that's the hard part.

Just recording an episode every week or so is no big deal and you're going to continue to refine your skills as a podcaster or and you're going to get better and better and better.

So, no, don't give up.

And there's ways to grow your audience once it's time, besides just recording, you can always advertise to get new listeners, and you can always, you know, try to build your email list and then start to get the word out that way.

So, no, don't give up, hang in there, keep going, you can do it, no doubt about it.

You can do it, the hard part kind of over, so keep going, keep recording, no doubt about it. That's my... that's my advice, look up in 30 or 40 episodes and then evaluate if... if it makes sense to continue.

But there are some metrics and I'm totally pulling this out or... my stuff I've read and I didn't reference them right before this podcast. But it's like if you record, I think it's like six, seven, or eight episodes, your chance of, like, continuing to go way up, so you're just in that rough period.

Just stop overthinking it, underthink it a little bit, you know, prepare for your episode, flip on the mic, record it, push it out there, and just keep doing that, and... and good things will happen. But no, don't give up yet.

And don't take your 25 listeners for granted, 25 people listening to you. I mean, there's that's meaningful, 25 people is 25 people. So, you know, if 25 people are willing to listen to your ideas, embrace those listeners and it will grow from there.

So that's it, that is my episode, so I hope that helps.

If you are someone thinking about stopping a podcast that you started or stopping a project that you're just now getting underway, don't stop, hang in there.

So I'm going to keep recording and send in questions I'm going to record them on here instead of trying to just email back and forth.

So send in some questions, I'll get them posted on here.

Rachel and I are about to take a big trip, we're going to Africa to watch the animals migrate and to Scuba Diving in Zanzibar. So we're going to... to watch the animals migrate, so, yeah, it's going to be crazy.

But that's it, guys. Hope you enjoyed this episode and hope it encouraged you.

If you feel like giving up on something, don't give up, stop, keep going. If you just got started, keep going and evaluate down the road, but keep pushing and that's it.

Make it a great rest of your week and shoot me some questions. I'll get them recorded.

That's it guys bye-bye.
